ONE CROWDED HOUR

“ONE CROWDED HOUR”.

The story of Randolph Turpin, commissioned by TIATA FAHODZI, assisted by Yorkshire Arts, “Make and Show” grant.

EXTRA INFORMATION:

As a teenager Steven met Randolph Turpin, after a wrestling bout at Cleckheaton Town Hall, Steven’s Father was a boxer and supported a charity that Turpin headed. Years later Steven was invited to research Turpin’s life story and submit a pilot television script as one of a series of programmes entitled, “The Women in the corner,” the series looked at the lives of the partners of famous boxers of the past. As part of his research Steven met Turpin’s brother Jackie Turpin and several others of his acquaintance. Turpin’s story was a fascinating tale of intrigue, betrayal and, probably, murder. He was involved with some very ruthless people who took advantage of his naivety. Combined with greedy family and friends and a child-like view of the world, Turpin’s tragic end was unavoidable. Steven’s research uncovered some very unsavoury facts and, to this day, he is convinced that Turpin’s death was highly suspicious and that many facts were ignored or covered up by the authorities.

Unfortunately the TV production company, decided against developing the series. Having done the research and having a keen interest in the story, Steven decided to write up the information as a stage play. TIATA FAHODZI were interested in the story and, with their support, Steven secured a commissioning grant from Yorkshire Arts to write the play, “ONE CROWDED HOUR.” It remains, up to now, unperformed.
