“BLACK ROSES”

“BLACK ROSES” is based on the oral histories of a group of women who were actively involved in supporting the Miners’ strike of 1984. The play examines the way the strike changed the role of wives and women in mining communities.

As the men lost their habitual role of breadwinners, the strike gave women the opportunity to win the right to their voice and opinion, which many never knew they could own or to which they had a right.

Steven worked with the women of Woolley Pit, near Barnsley in the preparation of this piece.

“Black Roses” has been performed as far afield as Perth, Australia. It was also a recommended read for the department of women’s studies at Zaragoza University, Spain.
