MAIDS AND MISTRESSES.

“MAIDS AND MISTRESSES”.

Commissioned by The National Trust and performed at Nostell Priory to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Priory.

EXTRA INFORMATION:

The National Trust approached Steven about producing a piece of site-specific theatre based on the lives of some of the women who had lived and worked at Nostell Priory over the last four hundred years.

“MAIDS AND MISTRESSES” took the form of five short plays which were performed in appropriate rooms/spaces throughout the Priory. They varied from a piece based on the memories of a kitchen maid, performed in the kitchen in which she was employed to another piece based on the life of the daughter of one of the Noblemen of the Priory. She suffered badly from epilepsy and was subjected to some horrific “cures”! The research, writing and directing of the pieces were all undertaken by Steven. The plays were performed in a mystery play, cycle style and the audience went from one to the other.
